Change of Visa Status for Registered Foreigners

1. Overview

• Registered foreigners who wish to engage in activities under a different visa category before their stay expires must apply for a Change of Status of Stay at the competent Immigration Office or branch (reservation required).
• For Skilled Workers (E-7-4) – K-Point Expansion and Regional Specialized Skilled Workers (E-7-4R), applications can only be made online via HiKorea, depending on the applicant’s year of birth (no in-person application).

Special Case (F-4 Overseas Koreans)

• Applicants changing to F-4 (Overseas Korean) who have resided abroad for more than 6 consecutive months after being granted stay in Korea must submit a Criminal Background Certificate from the overseas country.
• In this case, online application is not allowed; must apply in person at the Immigration Office.

Exemptions from background check requirement (still eligible for online application):

• Overseas Koreans aged 60 or above, or 13 or below
• Patriots and their families (including independence patriots)
• Overseas Koreans with special public contributions

※ Immigration officers may request additional documents if deemed necessary.

8. Important Notes

• If the applicant has been criminally punished in Korea, online application is not available (must apply in person). Exception: if already reviewed under Immigration’s criminal case examination process.
• Approval is not guaranteed. Applicants are advised to consult the Immigration Office before submitting.

• 외국인등록을 한 외국인이 체류기간만료일 전 현재의 체류자격과 다른 체류자격에 해당하는 활동을 하고자 하는 때 신청하는 민원으로 관할 출입국·외국인관서 또는 출장소 방문예약이 가능한 민원입니다.
• 숙련기능인력(E-7-4) 혁신적 확대(K-point E74)와 지역특화 숙련기능인력(E-7-4R) 자격변경은 출입국·외국인관서 방문 없이 신청인의 출생 연도에 따라 하이코리아 전자민원으로만 신청 가능합니다.
